Choosing the Right Aggregate for the Job

Every job calls for the right material. Here’s a quick guide to where each aggregate is typically used on site:

Ballast

Used for general concrete mixing when combined with cement. Ideal for foundations, footings and bases where a consistent mix is required.

Sharp Sand

Best suited for concrete, screeding and blockwork. Its coarse texture gives strength and stability in structural applications.

Building Sand

The go-to for bricklaying and blocklaying. Finer than sharp sand, it produces a workable, smooth mortar.

Plastering Sand

Used for rendering and plastering where a cleaner, more consistent finish is needed.

Shingle

Commonly used for drainage, soakaways, paths and decorative ground cover. The different sizes suit different drainage and load requirements.

Type 1 MOT

A compactable sub-base material used under driveways, patios and paving. Provides a solid foundation before laying finishes.

Top Soil

Ideal for landscaping, turfing and garden preparation where a quality growing layer is required.

Kiln Dried Sand

Dry, fine sand used for block paving joints and brushing into paving gaps after laying.

Canterbury Spa

Primarily used for specialist applications and finishes where a clean, decorative aggregate is required.
