Understanding Different Roofing Materials
Roofs are usually built using one of two systems: pitched roofing or flat roofing, and the materials used depend on the structure of the roof.
Tiles and slates are typically used on pitched roofs. They provide weather protection while allowing water to run off efficiently.
Lead flashing is installed around chimneys, roof junctions and abutments to prevent water entering the roof structure.
Flat roof systems such as GRP fibreglass or torch-on felt are commonly used on extensions, garages and dormers where the roof pitch is low.
Polycarbonate roofing sheets are often used for canopies, lean-to structures and lightweight roofing projects where natural light is required.
Roof windows and flashing systems allow light and ventilation to be introduced into roof spaces while maintaining a watertight seal.
FAQ’s:
Can roof windows be fitted to an existing roof?
Yes. Roof windows such as Velux can be installed in existing roofs, but the correct flashing kit must be used to match the roofing material and ensure a watertight seal.
What is the difference between slate and concrete roof tiles?
Slate is a natural stone product that tends to be thinner and lighter per piece, while concrete tiles are manufactured and often slightly thicker. Both are widely used for pitched roofs depending on the design and style required.
When are GRP or felt systems used instead of tiles?
GRP and torch-on felt systems are normally used on flat or low-pitch roofs where traditional tiles or slate would not drain water effectively
