What are each types of plasterboard typically used for

  • Standard boards – General partitions and ceilings where no special performance is required
  • Fire boards – Areas needing fire resistance such as stairwells, garages and party walls
  • Sound boards – Stud walls and ceilings where noise transfer needs reducing
  • Moisture resistant boards – Bathrooms, kitchens and utility rooms
  • Foil-backed boards – External walls where vapour control is required

If you’re unsure which board suits the job, it usually comes down to location, fire requirement and moisture exposure.

Drylining Metal Systems

Drylining metalwork forms the structure behind partitions and ceilings. This includes MF ceiling systems, C studs, U tracks, resilient bars and fixing brackets used to build straight, consistent frameworks quickly.

These systems are designed for accuracy and repeatability, making them ideal for large runs of stud walls, suspended ceilings and acoustic builds where timber isn’t suitable or consistent enough.

Tile Backer Boards

Tile backer boards are used in areas where standard plasterboard isn’t suitable — typically bathrooms, wet rooms and kitchens. Cement and foam-core boards provide a stable, moisture-resistant surface for tiling without risk of movement or breakdown.

They’re commonly fixed to timber or metal studs and used behind tiles, tanking systems and floor finishes where strength and water resistance matter.

Plasters & Board Adhesives

This range covers bonding coats, finishing plasters and plasterboard adhesive used to fix boards directly to masonry. These are the everyday powders used to prep walls, skim finishes and secure boards without mechanical fixings.

Each product serves a specific stage of the job — from initial bonding to final skim — and is suited to both new build and refurbishment work.

FAQ’s:

Which plasterboard should I use for ceilings?

Most ceilings are boarded with 12.5mm standard board. For higher fire or acoustic requirements, a 15mm board is often specified.

What’s the difference between sound and standard plasterboard?

Sound boards are denser and heavier, designed to reduce noise transfer through stud walls and ceilings compared to standard board.

Do I need moisture-resistant board in bathrooms?

Yes. Moisture-resistant boards are recommended in bathrooms, kitchens and any area with regular humidity, especially behind tiles.

What is foil-backed plasterboard used for?

Foil-backed boards include a vapour control layer and are typically used on external walls to help manage condensation.
